The Surf Towns Network holds its second working session on coastal regulations in Getxo

On Thursday, June 5th, the Getxo Itsas Hub will host the second roundtable of the Surf Towns Network, focused on analysing and improving regulations related to the use of coastal spaces for surfing. This meeting, aimed at the technical teams of the member municipalities, will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., in a collaborative and enriching working environment.
The main goal of this roundtable is to move forward with joint efforts to compare local regulations and develop proposals to improve the management of water-based activities, especially surfing, in the coastal municipalities.
The following key points will be addressed during the session:
- Review of previous work: The pending tasks of each municipality will be reviewed, including the completion of baseline documents for shared regulatory analysis.
- Input from private stakeholders: Reflections and proposals from the private surfing sector will be presented, highlighting the importance of including the perspective of those who live and work in these environments.
- Current regulatory analysis: A report from the Basque Competition Authority on the pro-competitive management of beach occupation permits will be presented, followed by a discussion on the implications of recent jurisdictional transfers regarding coastal management in the Basque Country and Galicia.
- Concrete proposals: Criteria for future calls for aquatic activities will be discussed, suggesting changes to enable more equitable, sustainable, and competitive regulation.
This session is part of a series of three intermunicipal meetings for regulatory review and updates, scheduled to conclude in June 2025. The Network thus reaffirms its commitment to a more coherent, responsible, and adapted approach to the realities of surfing and coastal tourism.
