Half a dozen schools in Getxo benefit from surf awareness campaigns led by Garazi Sánchez
Over a hundred students from Geroa Ikastola in Getxo have taken part in the latest awareness and educational campaign for schools, launched by the Getxo City Council as part of the Red Pueblos del Surf project, in which the town has participated since its creation in 2023. These campaigns, carried out in the various municipalities of the network, aim to highlight the value of surf-related tourism resources and the local areas they are part of.
Throughout this year, surfing has been brought closer to more than half a dozen schools through several classroom-based awareness and outreach sessions, led by the professional surfer from Getxo, Garazi Sánchez.
Involving the local population in the development of strategies to promote their territories, by valuing their natural and cultural resources through care and respect, is a shared goal among the network’s member towns.
In recent months, with the support of Garazi Sánchez, hundreds of primary school students from Geroa Ikastola, San Nikolas Ikastola, Andra Mari Eskola, Azkorri Ikastetxea and Trinitarias Algorta have participated in various awareness sessions, including educational talks in the classroom and coastal clean-up activities around Arrigunaga Beach—one of the five beaches in Getxo and among the most emblematic. Not by chance, it is the birthplace of top surfers like Garazi Sánchez herself and renowned skaters like Alain Goikoetxea. A beach that stands as an icon of surfing and board sports in Getxo.
